This flag was high above my head on the observation deck of the Empire State Building. I had just swapped lenses to use my 70-300mm lens, in order to shoot a close-up of the stars against the dark-blue segment of the flag.
(And yes, the flag was suspended perpendicular to the ground, not flying in conventional manner parallel to the horizon!)
Then I noticed the little pockets of shadows as the thick fabric rippled in the surging summer breeze and I scrolled the lens back to capture the contrasts against the flawless blue sky.
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F11, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 100mm.
