Hay, It's The Outback by David McMahon

Hay, It's The Outback by

The shadows were long but well-defined on a cold winter afternoon last year as I drove through the lush farming area that is the Riverina in New South Wales.

This farm scene caught my eye as I drove the section between Culcairn and Wagga Wagga. It wasn’t just the neat row of hay bales or the gentle tones in the sky, or even the spread of the old gum tree on the right.

It was simply the sum total of every aspect that spells the wide open spaces of Australia.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F9.5, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 58mm.

  • Thank you, Cee – the sky doesn’t suggest it, but it was a cold day!

I’d love to swing from the branch of that gum tree! Gorgeous!

  • That’s precisely what it’s there for, Leslie!

A typical country scene David….Not to far from me….Nice framing and shot mate..

  • You’re right, John – it’s just past Albury. Wouldn’t take you long to drive there. Glad you like the shot.

David: I love this country scene, nice depth and front face framing. Appealing playing of sun & shadows on the tree and the hay; clear blue sky with a few floating ‘cloud ships’. I must gather my views of Austrailia from pieces like this, and it’s a pleasent experience, thank you, Gloria
  • Thanks so much, Gloria, and if I can translate the essence of this beautiful country to you through my images, that is a great privilege.

  • Hi, Calvin, are you SURE it fits the theme? There’s more than one tree in the frame …. I might wait for your confirmation before I submit it.
