Solved by UK-based Red Bubbler Ellis Morley Photography, who answered that it was a winch. I shot this on a grey, rainy afternoon in Whitehorse, Canada, on the deck of the historic old sternwheeler Klondike.
In case you think this has been post-processed to eliminate all the colour, it hasn’t!
