Solve This Puzzle: What Is This Mystery Object? by

Put on your thinking caps, have as many guesses as you want – and most of all, have fun. Your time starts …. NOW!

Spoiler alert: do not read any further unless you want to see the answer.

First part of the question: solved after 90 minutes by UK-based Alixzandra, who correctly identified it as (very tiny) anti-slip safety nubs attached to the surface of a train platform. I shot this at Richmond station yesterday, on a grey, drizzly morning!

Second part of the question: According to the Harry Potter tales, the magical train Hogwarts Express travels between London and which other station? Solved by US-based Maxy, who correctly answered Hogsmeade.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/250 sec, ISO 400, focal length 125mm.

Featured in CONTRASTING PERCEPTIONS, May 2010.

Love your focal point ad dof, David. Are these for tires to remind drivers they’ve veered off the road?

  • Hi Jan – glad you like the DoF. Very good guess, and yes, rumble strips are very popular on our freeways, but this does not depict it/ them. Feel free to have another guess ….

Oh LOL I read that but I guess it didn’t sink in…I’m going to say Speed bumps??

  • Nice try. I like the way this is progressing. But no, they’re not speed bumps ….

I wish they had things like this at supermarkets to hold the trolley in place when the car park has a gradient :)

  • I’ve just got off the phone to your supermarket owners and they’ve agreed to install them tomorrow. How’s that for efficiency?

Hmm, childrens Park, Crossing, or seafront area?

  • Nope, nope, nope – but er, um, you DID use the word “track” on an earlier guess, didn’t you? Ahem, ahem ….

Are they colour tracks to different lines in a station? like the colour lines on the underground?

  • The word “station” is crucial here. Yes, I shot this at a station. But no, they are not like the different coloured tracks used on a map of the Tube.
