Solved by PBWright, who correctly identified it as a border Customs post in Alaska. This was shot in early September 2008 (with official permission!) at the entrance to the US Customs office at Poker Creek, Alaska, just beyond the Canadian border. Poker Creek has only two residents – the US Customs officers who man the outpost between mid-May and mid-September each year, while the Top Of The World Highway is open.
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F6.7, 1/250 sec, ISO 200, focal length 125mm.
