This shot of low-growing foliage was taken during a day hike through Kluane National Park in the Yukon, Canada, in late 2008.

The early autumn colours around the hills were just starting to appear, and the higher we climbed, the more pronounced were the contrasts. There are at least two types of green leaves in this frame, as well as dark bark on the right and lighter bark on the left – perfect for the overall image I sought to portray.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/900 sec, ISO 400, focal length 98mm.

Featured in POSTCARD STYLE, April 2010.

    Morning David…I love autumn colours…Ace shot! :))

  • Thank you, Di. Good morning to you, too. I think I shot more than 300 frames on that hike – which ended with the shot of the grizzly!

I love autumn and these leaves are so inspiring, that I want to do a painting with these wonderful shades …

  • Autumn colours are very inspirational … and if you do paint these shades, please let me know. I’d love to see the result.

As autumn is my favorite season, I find this photo simply irresistible!!! You have captured the colors and leaves so beautifully!! The light is particularly beautiful! I have a NEW favorite!!! I keep saying that…and then, you capture another spectacular image…

  • Thank you, Janine – the light was muted that day, with heavy cloud over the lake and mountains, but it definitely worked in my favour. And this was the day of the grizzly!
