Solve This Puzzle: What Is This Mystery Object? by

Put on your thinking caps and have fun! You can have as many guesses as you want.

Spoiler alert: Do not read any further unless you want to know what the correct answer is. The instant answer from Australia-based Captured by Kylie put everyone on the right track, because she said it was a novelty fan. A few minutes later, it was correctly solved by UK-based Ellis Morley Photography, who correctly identified it as a USB fan.

We found this in a six-floor tech store in Kuala Lumpur. There are deliberate clues in this image – the power button of a printer, the white cable behind the fan, and the corner of a keyboard.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/8 sec, ISO 800, focal length 125mm.

Is it a small novelty fan (the ones that operate on batteries with the soft foam blades)?

  • Spot on in every aspect of that answer, Kylie – but it is a VERY PARTICULAR type of novelty fan ….. so you’re 90 per cent of the way there!

As I am sitting here with my coat on, you just had to put this up. My quick guess is an alarm clock !

  • That’s ESP + international timing! Sorry to drop this puzzle on you, Sean! Kylie is right, but as I said, it’s a very specific type of fan. I wish it was an alarm clock!

(like the old dancing flower ones that jig to music)

  • Gee, I remember those gimmicky flowers …. good guess, but no, it’s not one of those!

    USB fan

  • VERY nice work, Detective-Sergeant! Yes, as the clues in the image suggested, it is indeed a USB fan ….. we’re all big fans of yours for having solved it so quickly. Was it a guess or did you follow a particular thought process?

You said it was a specific fan so the major geek in me thought “well it’s on a desk if it had been battery operated he would not have cared about what type it was” It was too small to go into the mains. :-P

  • Perfect thought process! Have updated with a link to you. Great work.
