Solved by Linda Bianic, who correctly identified the large brushes as ink brushes for Asian script. However, when I saw these in Malaysia, at a calligrapher’s store, I asked about the size of the brushes, because they were about a metre or so long, with the bristles almost seven or eight centimetres wide and about twelve or fourteen centimetres long.
I was told they were special brushes to produce large-scale calligraphy used on streets or pavements.
