Christmas in Australia – just in case you’ve forgotten – is in our scorching summer.
This huge blow-up Santa Claus was on the roof of the Dairy Bell ice cream parlour on Malvern Road in Melbourne.
Yes, as soon as I spotted this sight, I had to pull over, find a parking spot and get my camera out. It was a hot day, with a clear blue sky and the light was so strong that the shadow of Santa’s beard is clearly defined on his chest.
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F9.5, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 125mm.
Great shot! Gorgeous vibrant colors! haha I think our summer here in New Zealand has lost its way and headed off over to Oz judging by the high temps there. It has been cold and mostly raining this week and spring was our coolest for many years.
Glad you liked the colours, May. Yes, our November was the hottest on record!
Yeah, we had the hottest November for a while too, but we’re paying for it now (I keep thinking I forgot one or two of my layers, and that’s inside the train, not just on the platform…). It must be so strange to talk of raindeer and snow when the asphalt is melting! Those inflatable Santas are always funny, especially with bright blue skies :-) Good catch on the shadow, it looks like St Nick is looking down over Santa’s shoulder and only his shadow is showing ;-)
Yes, you;re right – I’ve been watching the weather there. And we once had 42 Celsius on Christmas Day – that’s over 100 Fahrenheit!
Greetings David; A great shot of the grand man of joy and happiness. steve
Thanks, Steve – you’re right about the happiness. I think one of the secrets to Christmas is that each festive season really reminds us of the carols and sounds and rituals of our own childhood, hence the deep emotion.

Do you really mean FARTher,
It’s getting cold in England now.
Cheers Neil
Now that you mention it ……! And on the second point, yes, we get warmer as the northern hemisphere gets colder.
