Today's Puzzle: Can You Identify This Building? by

Okay, all you sleuths from around the world … can you work out the answer?

This was shot as a friend was driving away from the historic building. I spotted this view in his wing mirror and got him to slow down to a crawl so that I could manoeuvre myself into position to shoot this unusual view.

If you don’t want to know the answer yet, don’t read any further, but this was solved by Sazfab on her first guess.

Yes, it is the famous Victoria Memorial in Calcutta, India – a magnificent marble museum. And the huge bronze angel atop the dome is actually a weather vane! And yes, it does turn!

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F9.5, 1/500 sec, ISO 400, focal length 125mm.

Looks like Eastern Europe. Somewhere in Rusland or even Turkey maybe? Great shot David!

  • Hi Anne-Marie. No, I have to nix both those answers. So glad you like the shot, though. Let’s see if you or anyone else can nail down the answer!

Is it the Victoria Memorial Hall, Culcutta? I spy what maybe a dark statue of Queenie?

  • BINGO – how on earth did you do that?!!!

LOL, what apart from being very clever……..deduction and a little help from google images…is that cheating?

I reckoned on the black statue being either a big woman -Victoria or buddha, on your enlarged one, I thought it to be Queenie, and that in the foreground is a hint of a horse or Lion, so I googled queen victoria buildings in india…et voila..

  • Yep, being clever is the main thing, Saz! Great process of deduction, Sherlock. It is an AMAZING building. There is a different view of that stunning angel on my RB site …. I think it was called ``Calcutta’s guardian angel’’.

It looks very British, but I didn’t think I’d seen it anywhere in London; thought along colonial lines so googled around the far east until I found the The Victoria Memorial, in Kolkata (Calcutta), India.
    Sheerluck Holmes strikes again!

  • Perfect logic. Yes, it’s British-built, from imported Italian marble. I was born in Kolkata, hence the fascination with this beautiful building. Great work in solving the puzzle.

Oh, too late!! But good fun finding it anyway!!!

  • Yes, but you worked it out on your own thought process, without looking at Sazfab’s answer. So everyone’s a winner!

    Great, imaginative shot David

  • Thanks very much, Shulie. It’s interesting to think I spent about half an hour shooting the building, but the best shot was when we were driving AWAY from it!

have to be the exhibition building in Melbourne…our first sitting of parliament was here. (I did pay attention at school!!)

  • You’re right about the first sitting of parliament, Thomas. And the colonial resemblance is interesting, too. But this time, it’s the wrong country!
