Frill Seeker by David McMahon

Frill Seeker by

About six months ago, someone (or some arts group) festooned an entire city walkway with a variety of antique lampshades. These two in particular caught my eye because they flanked a normal lampshade without a frill.

I could find no explanation for why the lampshades had been meticulously hung from the metal roofing near Hamer Hall beside St Kilda Road, but I figured they had been there for a while because this one in particular was very dusty.

There was not much of a breeze that afternoon, so I was able to use the two sets of tassels as an interesting geometrical counterpoint to the diagonals formed by the architecture above them.

I shot a couple of frames, but I like this one because it looks almost like a linear monochrome, except for the two light-blue fabric panels.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F8, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 75mm.

Nicely spotted and captured – I like the colour combination and composition

  • Thanks so much, Themis – I guess it appealed to me because even the dust is so “real” and so visible!

I really like this, something about it is most eye-catching

  • Thanks for your kind comment, Kalaryder – maybe it’s the subtle play of light across those tassels! Glad you like it ….
