Lost And Foundry (But Can You Identify This Object?) by

This might look like something from a steel foundry, but it’s just a ….. CAN YOU GUESS WHAT IT IS?

DRUM ROLL … victory music. The joint winners are Bevellee and Helen Corr. This depicts red strip lighting under a metal bench in the Bourke Street Mall, here in Melbourne. Thank you to everyone who took part!

This was taken without a tripod, late at night in December 2008. The low-wattage red strip lighting is installed in a rectangular recess underneath each of the metallic benches, giving them a space-age glow.

I did not submit this to the BENCHES group because it would have been a giveaway clue while everyone was trying to solve this contest!

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a 70-300mm lens. F5.6, 1/8 sec, ISO 800, focal length 88mm.

Featured in BENCHES, October 2009.

It looks like something out of a fast food kitchen to keep things warm

  • Hi Shulie. Very perceptive, but completely wide of the mark. (Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings!)

Is it a radiator? electrical heater?

  • G’day BubbleHex08 – good attempt, and a very logical one. But I’m sorry to say no!

An eletric/infra red heater of some kind? Perhaps for an animal tank?

  • Wish I could pass you the glittering silver trophy for this one, I really do, but I must say I’m sorry, you can have another guess ….

Is it a drier of some kind?

  • Um, no, despite what it looks like!

So, no heating function? The red hot thing is a lamp?

  • I have to say no, it’s not a heating function!

A toaster which has a moving belt – the toaster passes thru it, thru the elements and then drops out the other side?
    Uh, no heating…
The top of a roller window or door?

  • Hi Catherine – that first guess has to win points for the sheer creativity that suggests you could be a wonderful (very rich) inventor. But I’m sorry to say no.
The roller window or door guess is very logical, but (sorry to sound repetitive), no once again!

Can it be found inside home?

  • VERY good question, BubbleHex. My answer would have to be no!

Then tell me if it is part of a vehicle?

  • Sherlock Holmes, I really like your line of questioning. But in this case, no …..

Even if you say no, we get closer!
Let me try this: is it a luminated bus shelter?

  • You’re right (not with the answer!) about getting closer every time I say ``No’’, because it eliminates other possibilities! But no, it’s not an illuminated bus shelter!

It might be a luminous advertising. At a theater perhaps?

  • I seriously hope you solve this, because you are doing ALL the detective work. But no …..
