This was shot during a brief fuel stop in the tiny hamlet of Moose Creek in the Yukon in 2008.
This poppy in a little window garden was a bold splash of colour, despite the autumn frost. A few metres to my left was a huge sign proclaiming: “Moose Creek, population two great guys and gals and a friendly dog.”
The sight of a poppy always reminds me of my father, who would wear a poppy in his buttonhole each year on Armistice Day.
I do not crop, edit or enhance my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a standard Sigma 18-125mm lens. F 5.6, 1/125 sec, ISO 200, focal length 125mm.
Wow~ Gorgeous David!!! The colors are fabulous!!!!
Thank you very much, Cheryl – I was lucky that there were beautiful yellow and green colours much lower in the garden bed – so I was able to use depth of field to emphasise the poppy, which was so much higher.
Thank you, Helene. The red and black were such a strong combination that I was able to offset it by the foliage and blooms much lower down. Glad you like the result.
Greetings David; Great DOF and bokeh ! Very beautiful ! steve
Thank you very much, Steve. A couple of days later and I reckon the frost wold have claimed that poppy and the only other one that was still standing. Just lucky!

Thank you very much, JustArt – the light wasn’t great that afternoon, but it actually worked to my advantage with these beautiful strong colours.

I love how it seems to be floating…great DoF!
Thanks, Paul – it was on a much longer stem than the others, which were low-growing, so the DoF worked in my favour!

Fabulous shot David….Great colours.
Thank you, John – there were only two poppies left standing and I reckon the night frost would have claimed them very soon after I took this shot.
