Artist's Description

Yes, we all know the price of crude oil went through the roof a year ago, but did you ever expect to pay THIS much?

Relax – Melburnians weren’t really paying a king’s ransom every time we filled up our cars. This service station/ gas station in Caulfield had just been renovated a couple of years ago and they were obviously testing the price display software when I drove past.

And no, the servo (that’s Aussie-speak for “service station”) wasn’t open for business. I’ve deliberately framed the image so you can see the metal barricade in the foreground.

Yes, I had to pull over and park safely, then get my camera and take the shot. I do not crop or post-edit my images in any way. Shot in 2007 with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F9.5, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 125mm.

Featured in AUSTRALIAN AUTOMOTIVE CULTURE July 2009.
