What have I photographed here? Solved by The Walker Touch …. (1,375 views on 9 November 2013.)

This shot, looking up into the turbine of a V Australia airliner, was taken at the Australian International Air Show at Avalon airport in early 2009.

The simple geometry of the late-evening shot caught my eye, as well as the contrast between light and dark.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F4, 1/10 sec, ISO 800 and focal length of 80mm.

  • Thank you, Scott, I’m glad you liked it. I was a lot closer than a person normally would be at an airport terminal.

    great shot

  • Thank you, JustArt. The light was really bad that evening. It was almost dark, but if there’d been some sunlight, I might have got some reflectivity happening!

Nice shot! Hm, I thought it was a hubcap until you mentioned being at an airport :-)

  • Can’t reveal too many clues at this time – it’s entered in the Bubble Jeopardy group!

It looks like the middle piece to a fan.

  • Very astute observation, Glenda!

Does this go to a automobile by chance?

  • All will be revealed!

    Nice comp.

  • Thanks, Ranald. Always great to get your endorsement. Funny thing is, the light was terrible when I took this shot.

Great to see a different perspective of the airshow – this is almost hypnotic – like it a lot David.

  • Thank you very much for that kind remark, Veronica. When I took the shot, I could almost hear the chant ``You ….. are …. getting … S L E E P Y"!!

After over 18 years working in Aviation, mostly as a jet engine mechanic for several of the worlds air forces, I can tell you with absolute certainty, one good Tern,,,,,is a bird strike. Bird strikes not only ding up an axial flow compressor (as does any FOD,,acronym for “foreign object damage.” ie anything but air, ice, bugs, wrenches, mechanics,) but a bird strike leaves the Jet engine in the shop for a full tear down (Compressor to hot section/afterburner.) and frankly they stink. Working on a car that smells like roadkill because of a corpse in the trunk is similar. OK I was an EMT on Ambulances,,,,,burnt people and old human decay IS WORSE!), but not by much. Working a bird strike in Saudi Arabia, where all the flies from Africa seem to be attracted by the smell is a living nightmare. Only Bird that I ever wanted to see sucked into an intake was a Full Bird Col. in the USAF that was my maintenance group commander. :) Oh great work,,,all sites, esp with no post editing/cropping/enhanced color saturation, variable exposure. I love the digital darkroom.

  • Fascinated by your experiences, Alex.
