Artist's Description

This shot of raindrops on the brass navigation lamp on the side of the vintage vessel RMS Segwun was taken in stormy weather, mid-cruise, in Gravenhurst, Canada, in September 2005.

The colour of the churning water is almost black, which gives you an idea of the stormy conditions that evening. What really caught my attention here was the contrast between the timber, brass, glass and the roiling water.

The red paint on the timber is a great foil for the red glass on the lamp, and the dark-painted wood that the lamp rests on is a perfect match for the colour of the sea.

There is a series of reflections on the curved brass surface that actually show how I shot this image. I leaned over the deck railings, held my Canon EOS 3000 out with both hands, as far as I could go – and hit the trigger when I guessed I had a decent frame.

The RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Segwun was built in the 19th century and is the oldest operating steam-driven vessel in North America.
