Artist's Description

This shot was taken aboard the historic SS Klondike, a gold rush-era sternwheeler (or paddle steamer) that is now on permanent display in Whitehorse, capital of Canada’s Yukon.

For an autumn day (late August 2008) there was snow on the mountains around Whitehorse and there was steady rain, but I waited patiently to tour the ship, simply because I wanted to experience the history of its service to the region.

This shot was taken on the rain-swept deck but the mid-afternoon light was tricky because of the heavy cloud cover and the constant rain.

The coiled ropes were a perfect foil to the strong black-and-white scene, and the graceful shape of the anchor flukes really threw the many horizontal lines into focus.

I do not crop or post-edit my work in any way. Luckily my camera is very well weather-sealed! This was shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/250 sec, ISO 200, focal length 58mm.
