The Epitome Of Elegance

Melbourne is an elegant city at the best of times. But on the first Tuesday of November each year, when the Melbourne Cup is held at Flemington Racecourse, the fashion stakes are raised considerably higher.

This woman, with her striking outfit, walked past me while I was concentrating on something else. I immediately turned around and composed a shot rapidly. I only had a couple of seconds to work out how to frame the shot, and I decided to shoot a reasonably tight frame, concentrating on her headgear, her outfit and her bag, while including the fact that her arm was hooked through that of her male companion.

I shot two frames very quickly, while hoping that no one else would walk through the gap between us. There was a marginal difference in the composition of each frame, but this one (the first of the two frames) shows the sense of movement, while capturing the lady’s poise and style.

It’s interesting to note that the couple each hold an essential item in their right hands: she holds a beautiful bag; he holds a race form guide!

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a 70-300mm lens. F6.7, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 190mm.
