Walking Tall (Make That VERY Tall)
This stilt walker was part of yesterday’s Melbourne Cup parade. You want to know how tall they were? Jeepers, I’m guessing at least five metres tall.
There was a fair breeze as they walked across Princes Bridge, so the “petals” of this elaborate flower costume kept blowing up around the stilt walker’s face. But because the gossamer-thin fabric was translucent, I shot a couple of frames of the person’s face through the material.
Then, realising that lots of bystanders had their cameras ready, the performer pushed the petals down slightly, just enough for me to fire off this frame.
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F6.7, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, 300mm.
Featured by my co-host in ANYTHING WE WEAR, November 2009.

The intriguing style of headgear reminds me of a commedia dell’arte performer or even a court jester. But the touch of translucent, wing-like petals overlays a refreshing dimension of fantasy! Stunning!
David McMahon replied 28 days ago
Thanks so much, Gemma – I also thought the headgear was reminiscent of a jester’s cap. You would have seen these stilt walkers on the TV news last night, after the parade!

Wonderfully crisp and excellent DOF mate.
David McMahon replied 27 days ago
Thanks, Munggo. The DoF was important to me, so I waited until the stilt walker had those trees in the background.

Great shot, very bright colors!
David McMahon replied 27 days ago
Thanks, Kat. I’d rather be using a camera than trying to use those stilts!

LOve the color in this…nice shot.
David McMahon replied 27 days ago
Thank you, Connie, the light was VERY bright that afternoon, which is why I used the trees as a background to the pastel shades of the costume. Glad you like the result.

Great shot – she looks like a butterfly

David McMahon replied 27 days ago
Thanks very much, John. Not every day I have to point my camera so very high to take a shot of a human being!
