October's Last Minutes Of Daylight
The simple strength of this sight literally stopped me in my tracks at Southbank on the weekend. The sun was on the horizon, but the variance of light playing on the clouds caught my eye.
As I reached for my camera, I realised the true beauty lay in framing the clouds vertically, in the context of the strong architecture above and to both sides of where I stood.
So yes, it’s an urban ‘scape in every sense, but by composing this shot in the totality of the towering silhouettes, the triangles and the rectangles, I framed Nature in the context of manmade structures.
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 125mm.

Oh great moody shot, David!
David McMahon replied
Thanks very much – it was taken right down in the forecourt.
Thomas Simunsen
A typical spring day in Melbourne lol….Sunny, hot, stormy!!
David McMahon replied
... and muggy, too. A humid evening, Thomas, but the sky was pretty good!
Thomas Simunsen
It has been very humid for the last week or so and the lightning shows of an evening are spectacular at the moment!!
David McMahon replied
Great photo in today’s Herald Sun of the lightning strikes – did you see that?
IndraniGhose
Great title! And those last minutes framed so well.
David McMahon replied
Thanks very much, Indrani – the silhouettes are actualy two separate buildings, one on my left and the other on my right! So glad you liked this shot.
leonie7

David McMahon replied
Thank you, Leonie. It’s a good thing I was looking up, or I would have missed this sight!
Magaret Meintjes
Stunning! Well done!
David McMahon replied
Thanks very much, Margaret. October is the second month of our spring, so summer is not far away now! Delighted that you like the concept behind the photo!
LynnEde
What a great idea for a subject.
David McMahon replied
Very kind of you, Lyn. Sometimes the simplest ideas work the best!
Betty Mackey
Wow, very very beautiful. And as a person up here in the Northern Hemisphere where it is getting dark at quarter past five, it speaks to me.
David McMahon replied
Thank you very much, Betty. We are really enjoying the long days now, with early sunrise and very late sunsets. Glad you liked the shot.

Sorry – my intention, as ALWAYS, is never to offend.

I really like how this is framed with the angular buildings
David McMahon replied
Thanks very much, Shulie. The concept just occurred to me as I was walking. The interesting thing is that I had to find the right angle, in order to make two buildings look like one!
sfmilner
Greetings David; Beautifully done, love the silhouetted framing.
