X Marks The Spot

X Marks The Spot

This shot was taken in 2007, just as the dawn sky began to turn from black to cobalt.

I was driving down Sturt Street in South Melbourne when I pulled over and got out to take a series of shots of the Melbourne skyline. The tall building in centre-frame is Eureka Tower, the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. This was taken without a tripod, with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F4.5, 0.5 sec, ISO 800, focal length 30mm.

    Awesome capture!!!

  • David McMahon replied

Thanks very much, Cheryl. Luckily there was no cloud that morning, so the natural light was a perfect foil for the street lights.

    ♥ Beautiful capture !! :D ♥

  • David McMahon replied

Thanks very much, Evita. This was one of many great vantage points to see the skyline – and everything was just right for this shot on that pre-dawn morning.

  • Betty Mackey

    Betty Mackey

    Great cityscape!

  • David McMahon replied

Thank you, Betty. Because it was so early, there was no traffic at all, so I was able to pull over and park and take my time getting this and other shots in the sequence.

  • Puggs

    Puggs

Great Shot David, didn’t know that was down there…

  • David McMahon replied

Thanks, Puggs. It’s been there for a few years now, but I’m not sure what the significance of the X is, unless it is the southern answer to the huge sculptures on the Tullamarine Freeway!

  • John Kowalski

    John Kowalski

Excellent shot David, like the composition, colour and light!!

  • David McMahon replied

Thanks very much, John. I was lucky with the colour and the light just happened to be perfect for what I wanted to achieve. That’s just statement of fact, not false humility!

  • NonnieAngela

    NonnieAngela

Woow, great night shot. What a great shot for a beautiful scene. The red color make the warm feeling. Thank you for sharing your talent,David. *_^

  • David McMahon replied

Strangely enough, Nonnie, the colours change on the X – but in the few minutes that I was there, the red was a perfect foil for the pre-dawn sky.

  • Dinni H

    Dinni H

another stunning capture! I really want to llearn your skill!!!

  • David McMahon replied

Thanks very much, Dinni. There is only one secret – allow your photography to be totally instinctive. Carry your camera with you. And if you look at something twice – photograph it. It’s the simplicity (not the complexity) that makes some images stand out.

  • Dinni H

    Dinni H

thank you so much David, I made note of your words

  • David McMahon replied

Always a pleasure to be of assistance. Follow your instincts above all else.
