I'm Counting On You, Buddy
This shot of a genuine antique cash register was taken on the service counter of the famous Klondike Kate’s in Dawson City, in the Yukon in August 2008.
The manager on duty readily agreed to let me shoot some images while we were eating there.
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my work in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/45 sec, ISO 800, focal length 78mm.

Very nice shot David!!! I sure would like to know what that $5.55 bought when the amount was rang up?? A week’s groceries maybe! :)
David McMahon replied
Thank you very much, Ruth. I should have asked that question when I took the shot! Might have to research the answer!
Betty Mackey
Great shot, very enjoyable.

Thank you, Betty. The interior of the restaurant was wonderful, with lots of memorabilia. And the food was good, too!

I love the type used on cash register.
David McMahon replied
That’s one of the factors that drew me to this specific composition. Typefaces are a big part of my life, as a journalist!
Andrea Ida Rausch
Oh,,,,,,in times of our childhood the grocerer around the corner used to work with such a cash register! His name was Mr. Däumlich, and when he sold Corned Beef, he could not pronounce it right ‘cause he did’nt speak English. It sounded like “Koor-net-baff”, haha I remember that well! Thanks for reminding me :-) and congrats on the feature!
David McMahon replied
Thanks for the great stroll down memory lane, Andrea. It’s a great privilege to know that an image I shot in a tiny Yukon town brought back wonderful memories from your childhood. It’s the chain of life, isn’t it?
Evita
Fantastic capture !!!Congratulations on your feature !!! :D
David McMahon replied
Thank you very much, Evita, I really appreciate that. Glad you liked this shot. I was lucky – it was indoors and the (very) late morning light was just right.

Trish Woodford
Great shot, such alot of character, wonderful find :))
David McMahon replied
Thank you, Trish. If only these objects could tell us of the historic experiences they’ve witnessed, especially in a gold rush town like Dawson City!
Edward Henzi
Hi David, Is this Cash Register still in use? Looks like something from the 1890s or eadrlier. I remember seeing similar ones still in use when I was a kid in the 1950s. Beautiful shot of it. The wood veneer looks great. I love antiques and this one is something else.Ed
David McMahon replied
Thank you very much, Ed. I honestly cannot remember if they were still ringing up sales on it. I could easily find out, though! So glad you like the shot.
Heloisa Castro

Vickie Emms
Oh wow, and I was just there David, in June. I fell in love with Dawson City, spent two days there only. I couldn’t believe the sunlight at 1:30 am as we drove around the town taking pictures and on top of the Dome,,,,,,,I have a few uploaded here. I hope you can find a moment to enjoy them.
David McMahon replied
I was there last July and yes, I went up to the Dome. There are a couple of shots here posted from that series. I’ll definitely take a look on your sight. It really is an amazing town.
