Roswell Alien In Disguise (See His Antenna?)
... And it looks like he borrowed Salvador Dali’s moustache as well ….!
This shot was taken in Hosier Lane, in inner-city Melbourne, in July this year. It was a cold winter afternoon with rain and a biting wind.
All of a sudden I looked up and noticed a beautiful, warm glow from the lamp suspended exactly halfway across the narrow, bustling lane.
I literally stopped in my tracks and composed the shot to make the lamp the central feature. But by choosing my angle carefully, I was able to use this beautiful old building as a backdrop. Look carefully and you’ll notice that each of the three floors has a completely different look. Also, those wide windows show you just how grey the sky was.
By reducing the focal length fractionally, I was able to include the dark silhouette on the right, with the distinctive balconies that stand out so clearly.
Why? Because it just gives the photograph an extra dimension and endows it with the feel that this might have been an image shot more than a century ago …..
I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/125 sec, ISO 400, focal length 108mm.

Nicely spotted. Details are often far more interesting than the bigger picture.
David McMahon replied
Thank you, Ranald. I think it probably says a lot about my upbringing that I constantly look for the smallest, most intricate details when I have a camera in my hand!
Sazfab
very art nouveau..stunning lamp…
David McMahon replied
Thanks, Saz. You would love Hosier Lane – and so would Moannie. The ambience is great, the food is good and the decor is interesting from every angle.

Well spotted and love the comment about the moustache :)
David McMahon replied
Thank you, Kalaryder. I actually thought about swapping lenses and using my 300mm lens for a close-up, but it was raining and I wasn’t game to change lenses in such lousy weather!
