Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (And The Cars, And The Skyline)

This might look like a promo shot for “Noddy’s Adventures In Toyland” but it was shot here in Melbourne.

I shot in mid-July this year, pretty much at the midway mark of the Australian winter. It’s actually a reflection of a Melbourne street in the vicinity of Crown Casino – and I was fascinated by the fact that the huge Ford Falcon taxis looked like little yellow imitations of the car driven by Noddy, the character created by Enid Blyton.

Even the street sign has morphed (because of the reflection) into a tiny blue label that reminds me of the “Par Avion” (by air mail) labels on an old-fashioned snail mail envelope. You can see it just above the dead-centre point of this shot.

In case you’re wondering about the reflective surface, it’s actually the convex outer housing of a rear-view mirror on a bus.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/250 sec, ISO 200, focal length 98mm.

Great title and so clever! You’re right about the taxis, I expect to hear them going “parp parp”, and crown casino really is toyland. Excellent capture and congrats on your feature.

  • David McMahon replied

Thank you on all those counts. “Parp-parp” is so right! I actually shot a couple of images as traffic went past behind me – but the reflections of the dark cars did not work as well as they did for the yellow taxis!

all it needs is Mr Plod … very cool and nice to know someone else read the Noddy series …

  • David McMahon replied

And a Big Ears as well …. yes, the Noddy series was a part of my very early childhood. I read voraciously as a child – so I guess none of my teachers were surprised when I wrote my first novel.

  • Helen Corr

    Helen Corr

me too – bar the novel, but i am writing a thesis (not really the same thing at all) did you go all the way with enid – the faraway tree, wishing chair, mr gallianos circus, the put-em-rights, famous five, secret seven, etc.? weren’t they great in their absolute flaunting of ‘reality’ they made the possibilities in life seem endless!

  • David McMahon replied

Yes, Helen, I read every single Enid Blyton book. I grew up in a home that literally (no kidding) had thousands of books. And you’re so right about the way she peopled her worlds. Of course, my kids also read Enid Blyton too!

  • David McMahon replied
