Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting, Er, Lighting!

Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting, Er, Lighting!

It was after dark in Melbourne, and the lights were being switched off at home. I was walking through the kitchen when I noticed that someone had left a miniature figure of Po, the Kung Fu Panda, on the island bench.

There was only one light on, about ten metres away – so the shadow was not the sharpest but it was still sufficiently interesting for me to get my camera out.

Po by himself was not a great shot, but when I moved back slightly and included the sharper image of the handle of a coffee mug, things got far more interesting!

Shot without a tripod. I do not crop, enhance or edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 0.5 sec, ISO 800, focal length 125mm.

Featured in STATUES AND SUCH, June 2009.*

LOL… love this!! My daughter sings this song all the time!

  • David McMahon replied

Thank you so much, Jen – isn’t it funny how some old songs never go out of fashion. I’m sure Carl Douglas would approve of your daughter’s taste in music!

  • David McMahon replied

Really appreciate that, Ralph. I wasn’t sure what the reaction would be to this image, quite frankly. But I shot it as a spontaneous piece of fun because it was someyhing very different – and the feedback has been great!

Funny!! Hey we all have to have our coffee!!

  • David McMahon replied

Thank you, Kat. I’m actually a tea drinker, probably because I went to school in Darjeeling, but yes, I know what you mean! (And I do like the aroma of coffee!)

    LOL!!!! Great clarity!

  • David McMahon replied

Thank you, Helene. The clarity isn’t too bad, considering I didn’t use a tripod – actually, I have NEVER used a tripod for any of my shots. Glad you liked this one!

Oh yes it is off beat, and the choice of composition makes it so much more interesting.

  • David McMahon replied

Thanks very much, Izzybeth. The first two shots were close-ups of the panda’s silhouette, then I realised this was a far more amusing composition!
