Radiator Springs A Leak, No, A Bloom

Yellow, late-autumn flowers grow through the rusty shell of a vintage vehicle in the Yukon, northern Canada. This was shot in late August 2008.

I couldn’t work out what car it was, because there was nothing identifiable left on its rusting chassis. However, if you look closely above the battered radiator, you’ll see the distinct impression of an oval, which suggests to me it could have been a Ford.

Every time I see a rusting wreck, I think of how proud the original owner would have been when he or she took delivery of it when it was a shiny, brand-new luxury item.

I do not crop or post-edit my work. What you see is exactly what I shoot. This was taken with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/250 sec, ISO 200 and focal length 88mm.

Featured in NATURE’S RECLAMATION group, June 2009.

Interesting photo! Yep, that looks like it could have been the Ford insignia to me, too. Plus what I can see of the vehicle it has Ford’s vehicles’ traditional roundedness. Doesn’t mean it’s a Ford, though. It could also be a defunct make, like a Packard, which also had a roundish design. I’d like to see the whole thing to try to make a better guess. Sorry, none of this has to do with your fine photo; I’m just a geek when it comes to guessing old cars and trucks :-)

  • David McMahon replied

That’s pure detective work, Helene! I’m seriously impressed by your knowledge on the subject. Hats off to you!

Haha, thanks, David. That’s just what happens when you grow up in Detroit :-) Car stuff is in the blood.

  • David McMahon replied

Ah, now that explains it, Helene! Still, you know more about it than I do.

Lol, I just noticed something else . . . if the headlights were there, you could tell what year the vehicle is because the year is almost always etched into the bottom left or right of the light covering, along with some other codes numbers :-) Now you’ve got this car buff going, lol!

  • David McMahon replied

Great work, Sherlock. I’ll have to go back to the Yukon to check!

This is a Model A Ford. Hate to see them deteriorating but I guess nothing stays the same. At least those yellow flowers haven’t forgotten it. LOL Nice shot. Ed
