Bandama Crater, Gran Canaria, Spain. by

Taken earlier this year on a Cruise and Walk holiday, (Magic of the Canaries ) whilst working for Ramblers Worldwide Holidays around the Canary Islands, incuding Madeira, La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lisbon.

The Bandama Natural Monument is part of the Tafira Protected Landscape on Gran Canaria. It is also known as the Cauldron of Bandama and Bandama Crater. This volcanic caldera (crater) reaches 569m above sea level at the highest point on its rim, Pico de Bandama, (shown right of center in the image) and is about 1,000m wide and 200m .

At the bottom of the crater there is a derelict farmhouse, the only sign of habitation within the vast space. The steep walk to the bottom takes about half an hour. Volcanic ash of different hues is in great abundance, and there are some interesting botanic species of Canary Islands origin. Now uninhabited, it is full of small plantations and groves of various fruits which are nourished by the volcanic soil.

Lovely location; there is something about volcanic landscapes, and their chaotic nature, which appeals to me :)

  • Thanks very much Steve, it was the plume of cloud which attacted my attention coming from the highest point of the crater.

Superb shot David.. that looks like one hell of a hike to the top. The POV for this is perfect, you have the impression of height and distance.

  • Thanks for the kind words of support Wayne, not really a heavy hike. ;-)
