With regards to Google, have just been running a few tests on my own name
If I type David French
my own website comes up
If I type DavidFrench ( no space)
My Redbubble site comes up
If I type David French Photography
both my own and my Redbubble come up on the first page.
Google is all about what you type as to what you get.
If customers are looking for you by name fine if by product
its a different ball game.

There are a number of programs you can buy that will find where you list in google and other search engines with your chosen keywords. It’s useful to know where you may list for “Buy landscape photograph” or “photographer for hire” and then see if what you do to promote yourself has any effect on your listing.
It is a lot harder to see changes in google though as they use a system to lag behind any changes to the internet, so things you do today won’t effect you for maybe 4 months in google. Altering your tactics for google is a lot harder. Yahoo, MSN and Ask however are a lot quicker and can often give better results for finding new things and getting yourself listed. For instance I list really well on ask.com for the phrase “buy unique painting” But type that into google and I’m not even in the top 100. Maybe in another 5 months, google will list it too? but who can tell.
