Cartouche and mythical creatures by

Ancient maps hold many examples of cartouche, being artwork used for decoration and information. Decorative illustrations and mythical creatures were also used to enhance the maps appearance and to hide unknown geography. At best such inclusions informed the map reader with images of new lands, the people and the environment. At worst they entertained the map reader with images of fantasy lands and imagined creatures.

cartouche, map, cartography, fantasy, monsters, creatures, marine

Illustrator, musician and artist who loves his family to bits, probably sums me up.
