Infrared acacia
While migrating across the Serengeti Plains, some Zebras and Wildebeest (Gnu) paused for shelter beneath this acacia tree.
The false-colour effect of the infrared processing adds a very surreal flavour!

Hi David,
Good to catch up with you again! Still leading a double life as software developer and photographer, eh? I see you’ve transferred your IR camera conversions to a new business Khromagery . Is this supposed to be cross between “chroma” and “imagery”? Very colourful name :-) According to Google and various forum postings, you appear to be our local leading light on IR photography!
I like this photo more than minimalist Serengeti dreaming, I think, because of the added elements of the animals running through the foreground, resting in the shade in the middleground and generally being all around in the background. Makes me want to pan to the right and follow their progress across the plains.
See you later,
Keong

Beautiful!! Looks like they are walking through heaven…..
David Burren
Hi everyone, thanks for your comments!
I knew this image would get a reaction: it’s strong enough that when we were reviewing the day’s images on the back of the cameras around the campfire that night, several people in my group ordered big prints straight away!
It’s nice to see some familiar faces around here.
Loredana Crupi
WOW …wish I had been with you on that field trip. Awesome capture!

What a gorgeous image! The treatment does give a surreal mood to the whole piece.
David Burren
Thanks everyone! Just to be clear, the “treatment” here is in terms of massaging the colours. The original image produced by the infrared camera was like this:

Andrew Bosman
That’s really clever!
Rebecca Nicol...
Beautiful image – it is definitely eye catching!

You’ve been FEATURED
tazzae
It’s beautiful! The white does create a surreal effect. Is it an effect on your camera or a photoshop?
David Burren
tazzae, it’s a bit of both. The camera’s a special one that captures infrared light (which we can’t see) and produces a purple/red image like the one a few comments back. Then a Photoshop action rearranges the colours to produce the final result (the choice of colours is an artistic choice, but the rest of it is scripted).
Peter Marin
Top work David and welcome to RB. Swaping the colours/channels or whatever you did in post looks great. Comp is spot on with just the best looking tree. All the best
Janice Sheen
stunning. seeing your IR photos is making me start to think about giving it a go myself…
Roddy Atkinson
Hi David, this an awesome photo, I’m not familiar with IR photography, am I right in saying this is a special camera and not a lens on an ordinary camera?
