Social Flycatcher, Myiozetetes similis, Photographed in the wild at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, TX.

The NBC is a wildlife refuge for native and migrating butterflies and birds. There are no cages, and winged critters are attracted by a wide range of host plants and feeders scattered around the gardens, fields and forest areas.
I took this photograph with a 50-200mm zoom which wasn’t quite long enough to give the DOF I wanted, so I blurred out the background in Photoshop to remove distractions. Olympus E-3, 158mm, 1/100 @ f/5.6, ISO 200

My focus as a photographer and digital artist ranges from traditional photography to PhotoArt compilation and the less explored world of abstract design created with natural elements such as smoke, oil and water.

ah perfect view of the Flycatcher:) Looks very wise

  • Thank you Vesna. I suppose he is wise, but he wasn’t very social and judging by the flocks of mosquitos humming about I’d say he wasn’t very interested in fly catching either. I did enjoy watching him though and hunting about with my camera for a good shot of him :-)

    Catched the catcher,
    and looking behind.
    They seem to be frail,
    and nervous and vain,
    but they are always hungry,
    and jerky and afraid.
    And that beauty means more,
    to the silenced camera,
    no breathing and there,
    caught in his air.
Rosa (beautiful…kind , warm and elegant.)

  • Thank you Rosa for your wonderful words which describe so well this beautiful bird. He was very hyperactive, and as you mentioned, jerky and hungry. I waited a long time for him to perch for a moments rest so I could take this photo. The rest of the time he was just a yellow blur swooping through the trees.

    Una composición excelente……
Has tenido suerte en la captura Richard !
    Super linda…..

  • Muchas gracias Liliana. Es la primera vez que encuentro este pájaro. Es muy hiperactivo y tuve que esperar mucho tiempo a que se quedara quieto para una foto.

So he actually eats his hosts (the butterflies)?!!! Still he’s a pretty fella, Richard! ;o)

  • Thanks Krys. I didn’t see him eating any butterflies, but then again he wasn’t making much headway at devouring the swarms of mosquitos either.

What a beautiful bird! Wonderful capture, Richard!

  • Thanks Eivor. This was my first siting of this playful creature. He finally stood still for a second or two and let me take his photo :-)

love the shallow DOF on this Richard really highlights the lovely creature.

  • Thanks Barbara. I blurred the background some in PS to reduce distraction and highlight this little guy – he deserves the attention :-)
