Commonly known as the Arizona Fishhook Cactus, or Graham’s Nipple Cactus in the USA and as Cabeza de Viejo in Mexico, this pincushion cactus boasts fishhook shaped black or reddish brown spines and beautiful flowers ranging in color from vivid lavender to reddish purple. The flowers consist of 10 or more pointed petals, bright yellow and red stamen and a branching green style. After flowering, the remaining bright red fruit is edible.
Range: California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and northwestern Mexico.
