Waterspouts do not suck up water; the water seen in the main funnel cloud is actually water droplets formed by condensation. They have a five-part life cycle: formation of a dark spot on the water surface, spiral pattern on the water surface, formation of a spray ring, development of the visible condensation funnel, and ultimately decay. Wow! This is amazing Richard, and MEGA-amazing you captured it so well! ;o)

  • Thanks Krys. I’d never seen one of these before and wasn’t sure what it was when I first saw it. I tried getting some close ups with a longer lens, but they’re a bit hazy.

Just amazing Richard . . . we get those at times over lake Michigan. They never seem to make it to shore, thank goodness!

  • Thanks Kathilee. This was a first for me. From what I’ve read it’s a pretty small one, but I bet if I were out there in a sailboat it would feel very big :-)
