I think this photo really demonstrates the feeling of the little mining town of Real del Monte in the state of Hidalgo Mexico.
El Real is built at 9000 ft (2,700 meters) above sea level, so it is nearly always in the clouds. It has some of the oldest gold and silver mines in Mexico and claims such great achievements as being the “Cuna del Futbol en Mexico”, (The birthplace of Soccer in Mexico) and home to the northern hemisphere’s first labor strike by New Spain’s first miner’s union which ironically was organized by the Spanish Virey who owned the rights to the mines. It has been an active mining center for 5 centuries and is still home to many active silver smiths.

El Real is full of steep streets, and stairways where streets are impossible, and is scattered with intricate English inspired stonework in every nook and cranny. If you visit El Real del Monte, don’t leave without tasting several of the local Pastes which are an adaptation of the cornish Pasties brought over by the English Companies that ran the mines for many years.

There’s so much more to say about this little known Mexican town, so please follow this LINK for more information.

It is so colorful. There is kind of a strange sense of freedom with all the different colors. And the red that is closest is so striking. Beautiful photo. Smiles from Jane:-)

Yes; I think it’s the light gray fog that made the red so bright that day. Thank you for looking through my gallery and commenting on my work.

Beautiful image…..again one I had not seen. The roof line is so nice but so sad that there was a fire…...great depth with the houses in the distance!!

  • Richard G Witham replied

Wow; you really dug deep into my gallery today. Thank you so much for the attention.
I don’t think there was a fire. I assume you got that idea from the closest steeple, but it’s really just falling apart from 500 + years of fog and wind.
