I’ve never managed to even see a sundog let alone capture one with the Nikon. Lovely work! Any idea what altitude that cirrus is likely to be?

Sundogs are actually more common that most people think (generally more common than rainbows, for example). It’s just a case of knowing where and when to look (as you’ll imagine, rainbows are pretty obvious — sundogs less so).

No, not sure what altitude it would have been.

Cheers Ken, it was one of the best I’ve seen too. Really nice example of a “tail” heading back from it. I was lucky to catch it too.

I have read about sun dogs, never seen one. Thanks for this.

wonderful image Dave and I did enjoy browsing your other pics on your site too – you have some excellent observations in sunny billingborough 9and the skill and keen eye to capture them of course! fascinating stuff!

  • Thanks DS1.

Although I suspect I might misrepresented our village. It only looks so sunny because I generally don’t go out when the weather’s not so nice, which is about half the time. ;)
