Geeking Out With Exif

Back in May last year I knocked up some code to generate some (pointless) stats taken from the Exif data of my photographs.

The other day I found the Google charts API and got to thinking that it might be (pointless) fun to knock something up that used it to generate some charts from the stats. A little bit of PHP hacking later and I’ve now got a page of totally pointless charts to go along with the totally pointless stats. Things like this:

No, I’m not sure that it tells me anything useful either. But, but, but…. It’s fun to hack.

hey Dave…cause I haven’t a clue what this is about (not even remotely) perhaps about cameras i imagine lol…..

I AM impressed! and i bet a lot will be too (even those that do know a thing or two about photographic technology!)...

    Hehe.

Well, simply put, Exif is the data that your digital camera records in each image when you take them. Stuff like the camera model, aperture, shutter speed, focal length, etc…

More out of horribly geeky interest than anything I thought it would be interesting to see what came out of the data for all the images published on my main website. So, the chart above for example, gives an idea of which camera features most often.

And, I’m sorry to report, I’ve now changed the yellow into a colour more in keeping with my own site.

To be fair, I’m also rather fond of my PowerShot G9 and my Lubitel 166B as well, it’s just that I’ve not had them very long. Give them time. :)

    LOL!

    It’s….. interesting

and I’ve run one film through it and the results were enjoyable enough, but I don’t think I’ll be doing it again in a hurry. The Lubitel 166B is so much nicer:

hey just went to the link, wow, its like you took vintage shots, very cool effect for the eyes. if that was just your first and only roll, get going do one more for gods sakes as it will be better which is improving on great so come on one more roll from the bella please

One of the big problems with the Bella is that, based on the first film anyway, the wind-on mechanism doesn’t work terribly well. This resulted in the film not being tightly enough wound on the take-up spool which, in turn, caused a light leak that made a mess of the last three frames (the last two pretty much useless).

I might give it another go at some point, but the Lubitel is, for me, much nicer. With pretty wide apertures it also gives that vintage look to images while, closed up somewhat, it gives fairly sharp images. It seems quite versatile for a sub-£20 camera.

These 2 are my favs, yes you are right the vintage feel is there also. and the close to the viewer detail is just amazing. I liked the edges of the other photos, kinda like looking through thick glasses. I had never really thought about taking shots with my old vintage camera’s might do some box diving to see if I can find them. do you develop and print your film?

Sadly, no, I don’t have the facilities to develop the film. I’ve got a friend who does so when I’ve finished a roll he develops it for me and also scans the negs.
