Ever since I wrote getrbart I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a variation on that theme that might be useful to people who aren’t in the habit of getting “down and dirty” on their Windows machines, people who prefer not to install software they don’t know about and who don’t fancy running command line scripts.
Last week I finally cracked and started work on something:
This is a very early release of the software, it doesn’t do a whole lot of stuff. Things it does do:
- Lets you download a list of all your public art on RedBubble.
- Lets you save the list and load it again later.
- Lets you download it again (dur!)
- Lets you export the list as a comma-separated values file.
- Lets you export the list as a tab-separated values file.
- Lets you export the list as a set of HTML files, which might be useful for including in your own website (if you have one).
Please note that this is a very early release of the tool. I’m making it available to people who are feeling adventurous (or foolish, depending on how you want to look at it) and who won’t mind reporting problems or giving suggestions. I can’t promise that it’ll do everything you want, but I can promise that it’ll be free to download, free to use and will always be free to use.
If you fancy having a play head over here and have a read and, if you like what you see, download, install and have a play.
PS: Yes, I know the application icon sucks in a big way. I’m a developer, not a designer. :P

Watching with interest…....I own a domain that’s empty right now and the thought of all that coding gives me the heebie-jeebies…...I can do it…...just too lazy right now :) You’re a clever guy, Dave :)

Thanks Susan. I wouldn’t go so far as clever, but I won’t argue with such a nice compliment either. ;)
Joking aside though: this is one of the things that I’m thinking about right now. At the moment the HTML export is very “bare bones”. The idea is that you’d take the code and paste it (perhaps with some changes) into your own site’s code. However, I have been toying with the idea of a “site in a box” type export option where the whole thing is exported and then all you need do is upload it to your own site.
The big problem with that is either a) everyone who uses it ends up with sites that look exactly the same (modulo the actual images, of course) or b) I need to come up with a easy yet handy way of letting people customise the exported output.
I’ll probably have a play with the idea at some point.

Cool – I have just used it and this will be great for when I need to add previews etc. It leaves out untitled art, I have lots of untitled, hidden images that I use in tutorials.

Thanks for the feedback Julie.
When you say “untitled” do you really just mean “hidden”? It’s not designed to ignore art without a title (which, correct me if I’m wrong, would have a title of “Untitled”?)

It shows the art that I have hidden [things that I have had on public show before and have temporarily taken down to rotate my work], but not the untitled or titled art [screenshots etc, that have never been part of my portfolio].
so in a butshell, it shows things I have made publice once before, but things that I have never published.

Hmmmm, I have no idea what a butshell is LOL, but it sure sounds like something awful.

I just changed one of my published pieces to Untitled, and its showing up in the list.

I love it – now, that third column – it would be so useful if that column could generate the preview code
Dave Pearson

Interesting. I find that a little confusing.
All I’m doing is downloading each of your public art pages and pulling the details out of the underlying HTML. If it’s visible to the public it should be in the list. If it isn’t visible to the public it shouldn’t be in the list.

As a test I just marked one of my works as hidden and then used RBArtMan to download the list of works. Sure enough, the hidden work didn’t appear in the list.

Oh, yes, that’s a good idea. Or, even better, how about a command that copies the preview code to your clipboard, ready to be pasted elsewhere?

Thats the ticket Dave – that sure would be useful, and I think many people would love it.

Consider it added to the TODO list (which probably means I’ll add it tomorrow).
Sorry to press the issue Julie, but could I trouble you for some more information about this business of you apparently seeing your hidden works? Could you try the test I mention above and let me know what happens? (the important point being that after the chance you download your art list again — it’s vital that you download again after you’ve made any changes on RedBubble itself).

Great little application Dave. I have just downloaded it and installed it and you are right it doesn’t show up hidden works as I have two which were previously public now hidden and they are not on the list.
Just wondering in a future release could it be possible to have a column for the groups an image belongs to…. I know a big ask and I don’t know if it is possible… but it would be damn handy :)
Also is clothing going to be added?
Thank you for a great program :)

I also love how you can go directly to an artwork and with your other hack of editing a picture it makes like a lot easier and a lot less clicks.

Groups is possible, as is things like tags, etc. However, to do that it would take quite a lot more hits on the RedBubble server. Whereas downloading the art list only takes as many hits as you have pages of art (plus 1 to get the number of pages) things like groups would take as many hits as you have works.
So, it’s possible. I just wonder if it’s advisable. I’ll have a think about it (it would be handy, that’s for sure).
As for clothing: yeah, I should probably think about that at some point. It’s not like there’s any real difference, I just got caught up with the art side.

Thanks Dave and maybe if you do go ahead on groups, hold off until they sort out the future of groups and galleries… save doing things twice. :)

Just so you know Julie, there’s a new version available which adds the sort of thing you were after.
You might also want to check the About dialog too (under the Help menu).

Just to keep you updated Shelly: there’s a new version on the way (possibly tomorrow) that now has a button that takes you directly to the edit page of a work in the list. So now editing a work is a one-click step instead of a two-click step and using the “Edit a work” Greasemonkey hack.

Thats perfect Dave – I have a feeling that this will prove a valuable and useful tool to many members who often have difficulty in producing code etc – I love it.
Are you ok with me bringing attention to it in a journal for those on my watchlist?

Ok – back with another suggestion, although I love it as it is. Most of the bubblemail I get to ask for help with RB code for previews, is to ask how to generate the framed art previews to put on profile pages. The application at the moment has a neat Image style option [cropped, small. medium] – could this be extended to add, frame, black, no border etc. like in the purchase option previews?
Dave Pearson
in reply to Julie Langford’s comment,

Please, feel free to journal it if you want. It’s offered freely to anyone who might have a use for it so I’d encourage letting others know about it.
As for “product previews” in addition to the current image views: yes, that should be possible (I’m not sure why I didn’t think about that anyway) and I’ll see about adding that pretty soon.

Julie, there’s now a new version which includes an updated work-promotion dialog that lets you generate promotion codes for simple images or any of the product previews.
Hopefully this is the sort of thing you were looking for.

Shelley, there’s a new version available which includes a change that makes getting to your edit page for a work a one-click action.
Hope this helps.
