Imperialism?

Imperialism?

Taken at the Washington Monument – it took a while to get this angle perfect! I think it speaks volumes about the current political climate both in the States and around the world without taking sides.

Like this. Like the use of a B&W image fro something with such known colour. In a way it makes it a more colourful image

People can make of it what they want. I think it’s quite self-evident; not necc negative intentions but, hey, it can’t be denied the the USofA is an…issue for every person on this earth.

david, imperialism is a word, it has a meaning. it can’t be what someone wants it to be. words mean something.

Love the shot and it shows how proud Americans are to be in America. Glad you took this shot. Don’t understand the title but the shot is terrific. Please refer to what imperialism really means. You might want to rethink the title. Great shot though. Thanks for posting this.

daniels, thanks for the comments but i, and anyone who’s ever encountered semiotics, will tell you that words (and images) function as signs. Meaning is completely arbitrary. When i say ‘dog’, do you think the same thing as every other person on the earth? Or ‘love’? Or ‘religion’? “Words mean something” indeed but they mean different things to different people. Different people will look at this shot, and any shot, and feel different things. Susan’s interpretation is certainly valid, and i would certainly agree with them, but i can also how people might have different attitudes to this photo and America. I’ve travelled there many times and love Americans but as an Australian and as an active traveller I can tell you that a lot of people around the world hold different attitudes to what they see as active American hegemony. As American culture has spread around the world, i hope, this picture holds some weight for everyone… Thanks for the interesting discussion!

Its amazing that all the flags stood out so well for you, that alone is an achievement in patience and timing. Well composed pattern and great tones.
