Mother and Child by Dave Martsolf
This is a watercolor painted on 90 pound cold press paper that was first run through a laser printer to apply the ink sketch.
I am not even sure I like it, but it is what came out. I need to offer it. I loved it as my own.
Originally, the pen and ink drawing conceived all the objects around the torso (the piece’s original title) as drapery, but some how as I began to apply the colors, this is what happened. Not quite what I expected, but sometimes this is what happens in our lives.

For me it has a real vision.
A woman is a mother…but mother and child are a whole concept….a holy concept.
It is true. Man participates, yes..but once the vessel, the atanor of the alchemy of life starts..then she and child are the projecting force of Life.
And it does from water. The explossion took place..yes, as it took in the Unverses…the Tao..the first and the last. NO time…but afterwards, water as the supreme show of Love of Tao…opens up the birthing. And it is violent, for our meaning..as death, is extremely calm the profound Ying….birthing…and pregnancy is really violent…culminating in the delivering of the child, not the less violent than the sprout of a tree…It is holy…Dave…a New Madonna.

Hi Rosa, I understand the bloodiness of life; the real heartbeat. Yes, it has that visceral feel, but it is too flat and with no real feeling of light sources. I need to do another one sometime. Maybe it needs to be done with oils. Or, maybe it is just time to move on. I have aleady started another one. Little sculpture beings looking out over some samd dunes like the monuments at Easter Island. Life moves on and on. Thanks, Rosa. – DAve
