We are like biblical brothers -
Cane and Abel; Esau and Jacob;
Each moulding the other into the palpable reflection of our
mutual hatred and sibling rivalry,
Bile born creatures weened on cruelty -
Our malice made manifest in the pre-traumatic expectations
of the others’ injustice, and post-traumatic vengeance for
our self-fulfilling crimes.
We have sculpted each other’s character,
forged each other’s identity,
and have become, in essence, the other’s creator.
I am always amazed at the roles in which both Israelis and Palestinians have been mutually responsible for shaping each others identity, whether intentionally or not.
