Israel is the traumatized child of the Holocaust
with all the symptoms of abuse – exhibiting the
defensiveness and mistrust from one who has
been hit far too many times.
The Holocaust is not history:
Our grandparents still wear the numbers on their
forearms – indelible evidence that the nightmare
Our parents bare the names of dozens of dead
relatives – saddled with the burden of ghosts from
foreign lands that have been turned into the
memorial-grey graveyards of our people.
We believe the rhetoric of our enemies and the
seriousness of the bellicose bluff of potentates
whose similar call to the will of divinity results
in the death of both their followers and ours.
And the Diaspora?
We…we are confused, unsure of what to make
of ourselves in a world where identity is fluid,
and the context of the past does not seem to
matter to the sound-bytes of the present -
Where opinion shifts on the basis of a Tweet
or the number of likes on Facebook;
Where some wonder, where does Israel Begin
and Judaism end?
My opinion on the questions facing Israel and Jewish identity.
