black babies

time makes heaps of
earth,
covered with
flowers
in shapes of the
starving.
there’s no hiding
from the
terror,
nothing to creep
behind.
like stars sunk
in black
pools, ashamed of
our own glittering
spangles, we don’t
wait for those we
have left
behind.
there are
rumblings from beneath the
dry unforgiving
earth; thin twisted trees
sprout from the land pointing the
way, like
signposts for the
dead, their lichen-
covered bark just
more tired human
flesh.

image
violating our
homes like
some unwelcome
enemy, brooding in the icon
corner.
we don’t want them
there, evoking our
pity;
the taut stretched
skin, like a tuneless
drum or
cathedral
vault
echoing with the
rise and fall of their
dying, rasping
expiration.
there is no end
to them,
like mirrors reflecting each
other
in each other
forever.
those sad eyes
with their gentle
accusation
we cannot
forget…
and we wish them
gone.
