pestilence (part two)

the city sleeps

here crawls one on
bandaged stumps, a wooden
block in either hand
against wearing out
hands as well as
feet.
he dribbles as he
speaks, his voice garrulous and
grating:

“I long past wore away my
legs through constant
travelling,
trying desperately to
leave
the city for some other
place, bright and garish,
like the inner world of precious
stones, they say. but
I have learned over many
lifetimes
that there is no such place; all roads lead to the
city and the city is
everywhere.
my path has been
circular since the
beginning of my
journey; and yet I may not
stop, even though no kingdom
awaits me anywhere.”

another rises out of the
gloom;
another body, another plaintive
voice, thin and
insubstantial.

a gaunt visage, this
one. pale like candle wax.
a face like cold
chicken, or a vampire’s
victim. she is apparelled in
night’s hue, and
floats and hovers in a grey
mist. her voice, lugubrious and
monotone,
insinuates from out her mournful
face:

“I was birthed in grey, suckled in deep
night; the catalogue of my
suffering
covers my meagre body like an endless
tattoo, vile and
festering.
medication only added to my
ills, until I became an embalmed
corpse
whilst still living. I am versed in grim
suicidalism
and die often. alas, they always bring me
back”

next, in a cracked and filthy
window,
appears an old head, sly and
rodent-like. it
thinks and projects its
words, rather than speaks them; a septic
percolation:

“ I am the spirit behind all
hatred; I bind and I loose, in
heaven and on
earth. I inspire the mob to
hack and slay. I am the mantra of the
ideologue, I am the racist’s
slur. I am cold midnight
murder, and torture in the
dark…”

  • Thank you for your kind comment, Danica, and for the invitation to join your group. I have joined, but in view of the group rules I think I had better just submit writing, as I think my images would be inappropriate for this group. Thanks again.
