pestilence (part one)

the city sleeps.

sin rises like a dirty
vapour from off the crazed
paving stones
and permeates the darkness.

the city sleeps.

all manner of
ills conceal themselves here,
and
breed contagion.
leathern wings flap in the darkness,
raising a noxious
odour; rodents, flea-ridden and yellow-
fanged, form an infested
mass, which bubbles like
pitch, spreading horribly
throughout the poisoned
alleyways. then out of the
silence percolate grim
voices, as each
of the denizens of
that loathsome
place steps forth to tell their tale:

first the Whore:

“I learnt my trade from my dear
mother, who
rented me out for my tiny
body and my
innocence. men and
women paid
well for this violation. if I
failed to please I was beaten
like a cur. I learnt many tricks.”

then speaks the Man of Shadows:

“ I began life in hunger, my
body skeletal
and weak; as I grew, my parents having
died I was forced to
beg against the inanition that
consumed
me, and
when that failed I used the knife. I learnt to
wait in corners for my victims, any
pity I felt
for them soon
dissipating as I learnt what it was
to be filled. I soon knew the swiftest ways to
slice a man and steal his
goods.”

next appears the Purveyor of Narcotics:

“I bought dreams, then sold
them for more dreams. nightmares
stalked my veins like toothed
parasites;
I infected others and grew
rich. now I wear a crown and smile
through golden teeth. the number of
my vassals grows like a vampire
coven.”

rising from the sewer like a dank
miasma:

the Murderer of Many,
his gory locks a badge of his
crimes.

“given the circumstances of
my birth, my inner make-up and
my stars, I could have
travelled no other
path. my cruelty is my self-
loathing writ large. I must
kill to live, and live to
kill; and I rejoice in the
harvest.”

then the Housebreaker:

“ I soon discovered that I had this unholy
gift, and, being poor, I
developed it and used it to the
full.
from entering the houses of the
rich,
which gave me no pain, I
found delight in ravishing the
properties of the
poor. soon, I needed not to
steal, but continued to do so
simply for the
pleasure it gave me…not only taking
what was not my own, but
destroying what I did not
take.”

the city sleeps…
