Christmas?

another Christmas has
gone;
it
slipped out of the
door when we weren’t
looking.
but the trappings have over-
slept
and still hang
around, resentful:
holly,
with its concealed
weaponry, and its
berries like seasonal blood-
clots. and the
tree,
smug and deluded as
ever, sparking with insincere
light, like its
sisters
in shop windows
garnering wealth for the
wealthy.
and such imprints at the tree’s foot,
where once the mysterious wrapped
parcels were! we fall,
you and I, into
those deep
pits,
cascading downwards
round and
round. we cannot think of stopping;
but, like Alice, we shall
grab what we can from the
shelves
on the walls. if we are
lucky,
perhaps we shall find
a
little
golden
key,
to help us make
sense
of it
all

I’ve never celebrated Christmas. It’s seems joyous from a distance, but i’ve always wondered if there was another side that I don’t hear people talk about. You satisfied my curiosity.

  • Thanks, rivysue. I think there are many sides to Christmas, and it means different things to different people. I’m wondering why you have never celebrated it. Is that for reliigious reasons?

rivysue has made a great comment … christmas means all kind of things to all kinds of people … for me personally it’s associated with a childhood tragedy that affected a lifetime … your lines are beautifully pointed, well written as always

  • Thank you so much, Carol. I’m sorry to hear that, for you, Christmas is associated with tragedy.

The true meaning of Christmas was lost somewhere along the way….it is no longer about the birth of a Savior and not the giving of heart and soul, but it is all about the Department Stores and the rich becoming richer…and the foolish making the rich richer….and not celebrating the true meaning….excellent writing!! xo

  • Thanks, Sally. There doesn’t seem to be much of the Christmas spirit left. Someone told me a couple of weeks ago they were putting up a “Holiday Tree” in their house.

well written. i can’t seem to fathom it all out either – everything builds up to that one moment and then it’s over so quickly. the meal’s been eaten, the presents opened and then, what then, christmas over …… and then we go back to our everyday lives and way of thinking and we’re allowed to be the way we were before – busy, nasty, stressed ………….
  • Yes, maybe part of the problem is the build-up. It lasts so long and suddenly it’s here and we’re rushed along to the next money – making event. Thanks, Ruth.

another great work with feeling and talent happy new year or is that too much to ask any way keep belging out your works from the bowels of humanity.

  • Thanks for your support, Tim. Happy New Year to you, too. (Belging?? Is this some obscure Gaelic word? Anyway, I’ll keep working as usual in humanity’s bowels).
