Hungry and Homeless

As I sit here pale with cold
I do not ask for food;
you may think you know me
but I’m neither bad nor good.
If you wish to help me
I will not forget,
my body is an empty room
but you’ve not killed me yet.

You tell me that you’ve left me
but I feel your wholesome breath
crawling up my body
like some harbinger of death.
My hands are unkempt vultures
from the lands behind the moon,
if you wish to kill me
can you do it soon.

You whose skin is gentle
like a segment of sweet fruit,
Oh touch it to my old cracked lips
or my old wrinkled boot,
let me see inside you
so I can know you well, now
lift your skirt before me,
or you can go to Hell.

You see me that I’m lonely,
you see that I’m alone,
but you don’t see that if I’m thin
it’s with your skin and bone.
Do not say you pity me
the mirror gives you back
the cold reflection of your hate.
You haven’t killed me yet.

Do not shake your cheques at me,
don’t wave your crucifix;
put down your jewelled Bibles,
you cannot heal the sick;
maybe I could sing for you
or do a cripple’s dance,
or maybe you could kill me,
it’s all a game of chance.

You who have a home to sell
for buttons and a ring;
you who have no time to stop
and hear a beggar sing;
exchange your golden mountain
that gleams like Moses’ face,
yes, change your golden mountain
for one passionate embrace.

Why do you look so empty
like a whore who doesn’t play?
Why are you sadly hiding,
they’ll find you anyway.
Why do you wear a rictus
instead of frilly clothes,
now find the stuff you’re
looking for, underneath your nose.

Yesterday you looked down on me,
my rags were letters from
a town you wouldn’t visit
in case there was a bomb.
And does my sweat offend you,
my stains and dirty wounds,
maybe you should kill me
to hear the dying sounds.

The sores upon my filthy flesh
are curses on your head
which fills to overflowing
and leaks out on your bed.
The walls of your house are lined with
silk, they’re painted with regret,
the pain that sorrow fills you with
that you haven’t killed me yet.
