in this Twilight
20×16” oil painting and ink on canvas.
Inspired by Year Zero by NIN, specifically the track “In This Twilight.” This is my Resistance Fighter (a character I invented) and a dark self-portrait.
The role we have in our planet’s destruction and ultimate demise is larger than we think.
we’re all underground sometimes.
ART IS RESISTANCE!
Original painting not for sale.
Lyrics to In This Twilight:
watch the sun,
as it crawls across a final time
and it feels like,
like it was a friend.
it is watching us,
and the world we set on fire
do you wonder,
if it feels the same?
and the sky is filled with light
can you see it?
all the black is really white
if you believe it
as your time is running out
let me take away your doubt
you can find a better a place
in this twilight
from dust to dust,
ashes in your hair remind me
what it feels like
and I won’t feel again
night descends
could I have been a better person
if I could only do it all again
and the sky is filled with light
can you see it?
all the black is really white
if you believe it
and the longing that you feel
you know none of this is real
you will find a better place
in this twilight

Since this is ‘magnum opus’ group, i thought I’d add a bit more about the painting and why i consider it my finest to date. when i began working on it, i had taken a long hiatus from painting and had just gotten back into oils again. I finally got my own home studio set up and this was the first detailed and meaningful work to come out of my brushes. I feel strongly about what we’re doing to the environment, and that i’m in the world I live in but not of it. I see a very dark future in store for us as a human race and this painting to me brought forth onto canvas how i surreally view myself. my head is not in the clouds, it’s underground, where I prefer to be anonymous and have important political and environmental messages. in this painting, I used a lot of wash techniques, and turned 180 degrees it’s almost creepier. I hope you enjoy and if you have questions, please ask. thanks for viewing.

This painting is captivation and haunting… the lyric from which it was inspirited is definitely sobering consideration for humans and the planet.

I have taken a while to sit with this work, you have said so much in this piece, thats what I love about good art. Your story feels so familiar to me about your hiatus and setting up your home studio and then this work being so meaningful to you. I think that is the beauty of painting with oils, it means the painting you do means alot to you, its worth doing it well, with good materials because it matters. Your message is so powerful in this work, so bold, so emotive, so terrifyingly true. I also love your techniques, and the fact that you have placed yourself central. I think that means that you realise your part in what we humans are doing to this earth and however hard that is to aknowledge, we can’t do it any longer. There are so many of us wearing blindfolds.

melodious, thank you so much for such a thoughtful and heartfelt response, and for taking the time :) this piece is currently hanging in a minneapolis gallery, and I miss it in my studio. You’re very right about oils…and i see the same qualities in a lot of your work where you really want to have the best impact with your message and take the time that oils requires of you. You really understand this piece and that’s always a great thing, when the message is received loud and clear. You’re right. there are way too many wearing blindfolds. If I really wanted to challenge myself, I’d do a self-portrait where i was smiling and holding a basketful of puppies with a rainbow behind me LOL. I get slammed by other artists sometimes for not being more “shiny happy” with my work, but every artist has a place in this world. I just know where mine is, and I think sometimes people don’t like the truth. thanks again for such a thoughtful response to my favorite work.

I agree with Ginger wholeheartedly.
My own views tend to be quite dark, and it’s interesting to see another’s take on the situation which reflects this also.

thank you, Enivea.

Hey darkest. . .I would agree that this is your strongest piece in the gallery. It’s thought-provoking. Appreciate your taking time to elucidate your worldview. Helps to underpin the meaning. Cheers!
darkestartist replied
thank you very much for taking the time to read the description :) and I am glad you managed to digitally capture all your work, it would be such a shame if nothing had survived from that mess.
