The tea garden in Manas, adjacent to a lodge called Bansbari, appeared to be very well kept. But after several days, one of the locals confided in me that the owner had fallen on hard times several years ago. The garden itself was more than 60-70 years old, and was nearly the end of its effective productive life. The tea was still picked, and the the pickers were paid by the Assamese government, This was a worry, as the garden is key to the income of the local people, and if the government stops paying and the tea garden is not maintained, the locals will lose out considerably.
