Life in a gas mask belongs to the following groups:

Flash Fiction

It was hard to live your life with a gas mask on.
Distorting the words you wanted to really say and clouding the sights you wanted to see.
Nadine knew this.
For the last 30 years it had destroyed her marriage and alienated her children.
Alcohol seeped through the mask and diluted the bondage and made the mask a little easier to ignore.
Medication didn’t work when she took it and everybody told it did when she didn’t.
Then one day Nadine took the mask off and it was all so clear .
In her car with the windows up and the hose connected to the tail pipe.
As the cockroaches, mice , spiders and rats ignored the purring motor in the garage till the fuel run out.
Clarity was brief and so was the answer.

Bit of a bleak start to 2009 here mate.

    Good but.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR DANNY

  • Danny replied

    Thank you my friend
It’s great to have a break.
I’m in two minds in regard to the bleakness of this piece but then again there is a whole back story I neglected to mention.
    On a more positive note.
I hope this year is the best ever for you and your kin.

Clarity was brief and so was the answer…

This is haunting Danny. Even proportions of strength and intimacy. Knowing the backstory makes it even more superb. I don`t have the right words to sum up how this makes me feel..

I’m wondering what the question was….

  • Danny replied

she never made that part clear and I think that also added to the problems.
I think she found the questions and the answer somewhere between making the decision and turning the key.

I’ve come back to this piece at least five times Danny, just don’t have the words to give it the comment it deserves. Clarity is so hard to find for so many these days.
I’ll probably keep coming back to this…

  • Danny replied

    Thanks Roger.
When I got the news of the suicide, for some strange reason thought that a gas mask would have solved that problem then immediatly regretted it, then realised she lived life like she had one on all the time.
She never seemed to fit in with anyone or group anymore.
She had a troubled life and had emotional lows and highs that were exhausting.
In the end it got tedious and everyone kept there distance.
She was found 3 days after the fact, she was that alone.

my second day on this.. and i stick to my original conclusion … it’s damn good.
For some clarity is unobtainable until it is too late….....inspired writing…....b

  • Danny replied

    Thanks butch
I should have supplied some back story but I think I supplied some more relevant info above to maybe clarify the story but never her life.
That will always be a mystery to everyone but her.

you don’t need any ‘back story’ as it is as clear as day itself. you’ve nearly inspired me to take up reading again- you’ll be the best judge of whether or not you deserve some sort of spotter’s badge for that.

    Your’s is the highest praise
