Some great freebies

Today is my son Liam’s birthday and for some strange quirk of fate his favourite author Mathew Reilly always tends to release a new novel within a week of this date.
I introduced Liam to Reilly a few years ago and in turn he made me enjoy his other works after he couldn’t get enough of his writing.
Fair cop Mathew Reilly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, my niece the soon to be PhD says she wishes he would use more punctuation, my brother thinks he takes things to extremes.
Me, like Liam think he writes great “Ripping Yarns” and his prose just makes your eyes read faster with every page.
Now, the reason I wrote this post (besides keeping Nat happy and not doing a ” I was featured page”) was to point people to Mathew Reilly’s web page where he has free Flash fiction to download.
Wonderful short and sharp stories written with a” person in a hurry” in mind.
Do yourself a favour and read the top 3 stories at least.
Complex 13, Time Tours& The Dead Prince
Sheer bloody murderous fun.

When I used to work in London I used to print bits off so I had something to read on the hour long train journey home … this would have been perfect. Great share Danny. We should start a ‘train reading’ account, ask for submissions of good short stories and then publish a downloadable pdf (like a zine for writers). We could try it as a one off … see how it goes?

  • Danny replied

    top idea Nat
mine are all tere in my account for others to share already

I’ve always admired him for his passion and drive. I’m thankful to have a few signed copies myself. (although his action packed writing is not my cup of tea.. but I see the appeal for sure. I especially love that he’s got so many young guys reading!! that is just brilliant!!)
I love the story of the beginning of his publishing career and often use it to tell others as an example of never giving up. The story of how Matthew wrote Contest and was rejected by every publisher he submitted it to. He didn’t lose heart though and self published it himself, getting it stocked in bookshops himself (which is no easy feat) The Fiction editor at the Sydney Pan office of the time, read it and loved it that much that she decided to publish his next book… and weren’t they glad they did (subsequently publishing Contest in p/b as well). He is the biggest Australian action writer there is (and he’s published all over the world). A real success story… and a classic example of never giving up no matter how many doors are slammed in your face.

  • Danny replied

wouldn’t you love to have one of those self published Contests now?

I’m a firm believer that whatever you read, if it brings you pleasure, is good. Books aren’t better or worse than each other, they’re all just books, and the individual reaction to them is what is important.

Except the Da Vinci Code, that’s a piece of crap.

  • Danny replied

    Thanks Damian.
I can’t agree with the Dan Brown diss, I’m a huge fan as well as Grisham, King and especially Crichton.
Something about those that make the masses read that kind of hook me in
except Stephanie Meyer, somethings wrong there
